Morning Plenary 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Introduction: Welcome and introduction of program participants.

Orientation: Leigh Seddon will provide a general description of the goals and objectives of Project SunRIse and President Clinton's Million Solar Roofs Initiative. Allan Baer will describe SolarQuest: an Internet-based energy education activity designed to support curriculum in the schools.

Morning Workshops 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Workshop A: Project SunRIse
Description: Leigh Seddon and Jim Brundy of Solar Works will provide a detailed description of the Project SunRIse's Solar Schools Initiative. Topics to be included are PhotoVoltaic (PV) systems hardware description, PV systems equipment installation requirements, the economics of PV, federal and state financial incentives.

Workshop B: SolarQuest
Description: Allan Baer and Jim Pittman of EcoSage Corporation will provide an online tour of the Internet-based SolarQuest Renewable Energy Resource Curriculum. Topics to be included are SolarQuest '99 activities, Adventure Quests, in-service training for teachers and students, and fund raising support for school PV systems.

Lunch: 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Press Conference: 1:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Description: Linda Jzyk of Woonsocket High School, Leigh Seddon of Solar Works, and a representative from RI Renewable Energy Collaborative will publicly announce Project SunRIse with a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by a PV systems technology demonstration.

Closing Plenary: 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Presentation: Warwick Veterans High School (WVHS) teacher Norma Casten and students will present their work in the Savings Through Energy Management (STEM) Program. WVHS is implementing the STEM Program through an Energy Learn and Serve grant from the Connecticut Energy Teachers Council (CONNECT)

Presentation: North Kingstown High School (NKHS) teacher Richard Hartman and students will present a description of their work to power their 2 kilowatt demand classroom from renewable energy, including wind and PV. Funding for this program is also provided by CONNECT. The service aspect of this program includes high school students teaching elementary school students about renewable energy resources.

Conclusion: Program and Workshop presenters will facilitate a group discussion of Project SunRIse with the goals to develop an action plan for developing a state-wide for program for Rhode Island schools. The presenters will welcome suggestions regarding a 37 district tour of Rhode Island schools planned for the Fall of 1998 to provide in-service training for the Project SunRIse and the SolarQuest activities.

Directions to Woonsocket High School

From major Interstate highways:

    1. Take Route 99 North to Mendon Avenue; turn left on Mendon Avenue.
    2. Continue on Mendon Avenue as the road forks to the right.
    3. The landmark at the fork is a Getty gas station at the stoplight.
    4. Continue on Mendon Avenue to the next traffic light.
    5. Turn left at the light onto Cass Avenue, the landmark is St, Joseph School.
    6. Continue on Cass Avenue, the Woonsocket High School is about 1/2 mile on the left.
    7. Park in any available space.
    8. We will have a host to welcome you at the front door to the school.
